As a colorist, Pippel painted a magnificent variety of landscapes, still lifes and vistas in the Impressionist style. For Pippels work impasto paint is characteristic. Motifs such as Munich Hofgarten, English Garden and Deer Park made him famous.
Otto Pippel was born in 1878 in Lodz, then a Russian city but now in Poland
He began his artistic career at the School of Applied Arts in Strasbourg training to work on decorative projects, but his studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the Russian army for four years. After his military service he resumed his studies at the Karlsruhe Academy under Julius Bergmann (1861-1940) and Friedrich Fehr (1862-1927).
In 1907-8 he studied at the Dresden Academy under Gotthard Kuehl (1850-1915). A study trip to Paris in 1908 was to have a formative influence on his Impressionist style.
He settled in Planegg in 1909 where he was to live for the rest of his life. He joined the Luitpoldgruppe, a Munich-based artists’ group.
In 1915 the first of many exhibitions of his work was staged at Galerie Brakl in Munich. Franz Josef Brakl, an energetic promoter of his paintings, was largely responsible for forging Pippel’s reputation as one of the leading South German Impressionist painters.
In his studio in Planegg on the outskirts of Munichand on his travels through Europe, he produced his great work.
He died in Planegg in 1960.
